A Motif in Three Versions
As early as 2 July 1889, Van Gogh sent his brother Theo a reed-pen drawing of the painting. He counted it among his best summer landscapes and returned to the composition in the studio in September: one version in the same format and a smaller one, intended as a gift for his mother and sister.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the motif Wheat Field with Cypresses from 1889, by the impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. The motif shows a beautiful wheat field with cypress trees during a summer day in France.

Van Gogh is one of history's and the Western world's most famous artists. He has created over 2,100 works of art of which 860 are oil paintings, with the majority of the paintings created in the last two years of his life.

Van Gogh's paintings are colorful and dramatic with an impulsive and expressionistic style. Van Gogh saw no commercial success during his lifetime and his works became popular only after his death. He died by suicide at the age of 37 after a period of mental illness, depression and poverty.
