Historic wall art for homes with soul

When the film that in Sweden was given the title Flesh and the Devil reached New York, audience demand was unusually intense. Capitol Theatre kept the film for a third week, which according to the American Film Institute was the first time the cinema had done so in its seven years. Already on opening day, police had to be called in to manage the crowds. The film also became Greta Garbo’s first major screen pairing with John Gilbert, the duo that would soon become one of Hollywood’s most talked-about. The poster thus belongs to the moment when Garbo went from a promising MGM star to an international audience phenomenon—not measured in retrospective myth, but in queues, extra weeks of exhibition, and tangible box-office pressure.
