Canvas painting Washington Crossing the Delaware by the German-American artist Emanuel Leutze from 1851. The subject of the painting is a depiction of Washington's attack on the Hessians at Trenton, New Jersey, on December 25, 1776 - An event in the North American War of Independence (1775–1783) .

The painting was a great success in America and in Germany. Leutze began his first version of this subject in 1849. However, it was damaged in his studio by a fire in 1850 and, although restored, was destroyed again in a bomb scare in 1942. In 1850, Leutze began this version of the subject, which was placed on display in New York during October 1851.

Leutze executed a number of history paintings, including motifs from the history of Columbus, Ferdinand Cortez, Maria Stuart and Charles I. His most popular works are the two depictions of the American Revolutionary War, Washington Crossing the Delaware River (1851) and Washington at the Battle of Monmouth (1854). At the time of his death, he was engaged in mural painting for the Capitol in Washington, a work he never completed.
