The Princess and the Goblin

Canvas with a fairy-tale painting by John Bauer from 1915. The work is called Look at Them, Said the Witch. Look at my sons! More beautiful trolls do not exist this side of the moon and were published with Walter Stenström's saga in the saga collection Among Elves and Trolls.

In the picture we see the beautiful princess sitting on a rock deep in a forest. She is surrounded by goblins from the gray mountains who have taken her captive. Sorceress is so fond of the princess that she wants to marry her off to one of her sons. A young man is on his way and manages to save the princess with the help of a spell he picked up through his journey in the great forest.

John Bauer's interpretation of the trolls as a creature of nature is evident in their lifelike shapes and colors. The contrast with the princess, and the turn of the century portrayal of the "ideal child", represents innocence and naivety. Bauer's work has shaped generations of children and their perceptions of the forest and its various fairy-tale creatures. He has therefore had a major impact on Nordic folklore and storytelling.
