The story behind the motif
Canvas with the beautiful painting The Lake of Zug, painted by the British artist William Turner from the year 1843. In the picture we see the sun rising between the mountains Rossberg and Mythen, behind the town of Arth in Switzerland. We also see naked girls in the foreground playing in the lake and villagers approaching the shore and going out in boats. The painting is inspired by sketches that Turner made during an extended stay in the Swiss Alps.
Turner is best known for his romantic landscape paintings, whose style can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. His art is among the world's most valued. In 2009, his painting The Temple of Jupiter Panellenius was sold for the equivalent of 103 million kroner, which is the second highest amount paid for a British work of art. In 2006, a Venetian landscape was sold by Turner for the equivalent of SEK 283 million.
There is a 2014 movie called Mr. Turner and is a dramatization of the life of the great, if eccentric, British painter.
