The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting Tjädern plays by Theodor Kittelsen (Norwegian title: Tiuren spiller ). The picture shows a beautiful, dark natural landscape in Norway. It is night and the stars are shining in the sky. High up in a fir tree, a woodpecker is playing.
"It's not the dramatic 'Effects' in nature that I care about. That's the mysterious feature in it, the quiet, the secretive ..." said Kittelsen in the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten in 1904.
Theodor Kittelsen is a Norwegian artist who, like the Swedish John Bauer, is known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses. He is also known for his beautiful nature motifs. Kittelsen's works are still iconic in many Nordic homes, but even though he is celebrated as a national artist in Norway, he is hardly known outside of Scandinavia.
