The story behind the motif
Canvas with the dramatic painting Swedish troops storming the city gate in Leipzig on October 19, 1813.
The Battle of Leipzig in Germany in 1813 was at the time the largest European field battle ever fought. Almost half a million soldiers took part in the battle, which was part of the Sixth Coalition War in which, among others, Russia, Sweden led by Crown Prince Karl Johan, Prussia and Austria fought against France and Napoleon.
The great battle resulted in heavy losses for both sides and although Napoleon was not completely defeated in the battle, the battle resulted in Napoleon being forced to give up the imperial crown.
