From old-fashioned to beloved
The painting was already considered old-fashioned in artistic circles when it was created. Ferdinand von Wright held on to the brothers’ scientifically precise approach to nature at a time when tastes had begun to move in another direction. Paradoxically, that very precision helped make the work Finland’s most copied artwork – from wall hangings to postage stamps.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting "Fighting grouse", created in 1886 by Ferdinand von Wright.

The painting depicts a dramatic scene where two roosters with their feathers up are at war with each other. The roosters appear to be in a battle for dominance and their body language – tense feathers, bared beaks and powerful claws – conveys the intensity of their conflict.

Von Wright was known for his ability to capture the details of animals in a way that was both artistically and scientifically accurate. A self-taught artist, he became a leading figure in Finnish naturalism, especially in bird painting. During his time he had a great impact on both the Finnish and international art scene.

"Fighting Cockerels" is an excellent example of his style, which combined a careful observation of nature with a dramatic representation of the animals.

Artist: Ferdinand von Wright | Created: 1886.
