A beautiful illustration from 1885 of the heraldic coat of arms of the city of Stockholm with St. Erik from, which dates back to the Middle Ages.
Stockholm's city coat of arms is decorated with St. Erik, a motif that has been part of the city's history since the 14th century. The first known impression of the seal with St. Erik is dated to 1376. During the Middle Ages, Stockholm originally used an image of a fortified city as a seal, but this was eventually replaced by St. Erik, who symbolizes the city's patron and the connection to the Swedish saint king Erik the Holy. The coat of arms was formally adopted as the city's symbol in 1923, and in 1934 it was established by the King. May. The modern version of the coat of arms, designed by the court graphic artist Karl-Erik Forsberg, is still in use today, in a slightly revised form.
