A Wall for Munch
In 1907, the painting was bought for Ernest Thiel’s planned “Munch wall”—an entire wall the collector wanted to fill with works by the Norwegian. Thiel’s major purchases also strengthened Munch’s finances and, according to the gallery, helped drive up prices for his art.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting On the Bridge by the iconic Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The work was painted in 1903 and depicts some women on a bridge in Munch's summer town, the small town of Åsgårdstrand in Norway.

Edvard Munch is Norway's foremost artist and became a source of inspiration for German Expressionism. Munch's works are inspired by existential themes such as melancholy, jealousy and anxiety, but also the Norwegian nature and places where he lived.
