From Living Room to National Gallery
For nearly 58 years, the painting hung in the Virginia home of collectors Paul and Rachel Mellon, even though it had been bequeathed to the National Gallery of Art as early as 1999. Rachel Mellon retained a life interest in the work and relinquished it only in 2013 – when it could be put on permanent display in Washington.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting Green Wheat Fields, Auvers by the impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. The motif shows a beautiful landscape on a summer day in France in 1890.

Van Gogh is one of the most famous artists in history and the Western world and has created over 2,100 works of art of which 860 are oil paintings where the majority of the paintings were created in the last two years of his life.

Van Gogh's paintings are colorful and dramatic with an impulsive and expressionistic style. Van Gogh saw no commercial success during his lifetime and his works became popular only after his death. He died by suicide at the age of 37 after a period of mental illness, depression and poverty.
