The work was created at the end of 1840 and depicts a majestic North Cape (Nordkap in Norwegian). Nordkap is the northernmost part of Norway and the place is depicted in a romantic and dramatic way, which characterized the Norwegian artist Peder Balke's style.

The rock pictured was discovered in 1533 by explorers in their attempt to find a way through the Northeast Passage but it wasn't until 1973 when Oscar II visited the site that it became widely known. Balke visited the place once and then chose to paint what he had experienced. Today, the North Cape is very famous for its beautiful landscape and a place visited by many people worldwide.
