When the Sport Was New
Around 1930, water skiing was still a new exhibition sport. Pioneer Ralph Samuelson had already tried skiing behind a pontoon aircraft in the 1920s, and it was not until 1939 that the first national championships were organised in the United States. The Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology dates the photograph to around 1930 and lists the photographer as unknown.
