The story behind the motif
Tre Kronor Castle in 1661 painted by the Dutch artist Govert Camphuysen. In the foreground we see Slottsbacken and the so-called Lion's Ball. The painting is the best depiction we have of the castle in the mid-17th century and is painted from the southwest.
Tre kronor was originally a castle and defense facility from the middle of the 13th century, but became a castle and the country's most important royal residence during Gustav Vasa's time. Then the moat and the fortification belt and the southern part of the stronghold were added. During the time of Johan III, the castle was transformed into an elegant Renaissance castle with lavish gables.
In 1697, Tre Kronor castle was completely destroyed in a fire. The current castle building was designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and was built on the site of the old castle.
