The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting The Princess and the Troll by John Bauer from 1913. Beautiful Bianca Maria walks through the deep forest on a summer evening with the sorceress and sorceress.
The picture was published with Helena Nyblom's story Bortbytingarna in the story collection "Among gnomes and trolls" . The story is about a sorcerer father who became so fond of the little princess Bianca Maria that he steals her from the cradle and puts his own sorcerer child there instead. The wizard child and princess Bianca Maria grow up and neither of them fit in with their new families. When they get old enough, they both run away back to their original homes.
John Bauer's interpretation of the trolls as a creature of nature is evident in their lifelike shapes and colors. The contrast with the princess, and the turn of the century portrayal of the "ideal child", represents innocence and naivety. Bauer's work has shaped generations of children and their perceptions of the forest and its various fairy-tale creatures. He has therefore had a major impact on Nordic folklore and storytelling.
