The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting What do you want here in my forest? she cried, as Santa came walking by John Bauer from 1912.
A huldra sits on a large rock. When Nisse comes walking, she looks down at the little boy with her green hair and exclaims " What do you want here in my forest?" . The illustration was published with the story The Boy Who Never Was Afraid by Alfred Smedberg in the story collection Among Elves and Trolls in 1912.
The story is about the boy Nisse who sets out to find the croft's only dairy cow that the goblins have taken. In the course of the journey, he encounters terrifying creatures in the forest, but because he was not afraid, he managed to get on good terms with them. With the help of the creatures, he manages to free the cow.
John Bauer is known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses and he has had a great influence on Nordic folklore and storytelling.
