The story behind the motif
Car queues on Sankt Eriksbron in 1940. In the background we see Sankt Erikspalatset on Kungsholmen.
Sankt Eriksbron is a bridge in central Stockholm between Kungsholmen and Vasastan. Before the turn of the century, many residents of Kungsholmen had to take a boat over to Vasastan in order to quickly get to their jobs at the large industrial factories. The bridge was built in 1903 after an accident where an overloaded rowing boat capsized on a December morning in 1898 and five people died.
