The story behind the motif

Canvas board with the painting The Boy Who Was Never Afraid by John Bauer.

In the picture we see a large troll crouching in the forest outside his den and in front of a brave little boy. "No, you little putty-noser!" cried the troll greedily.

The picture was published with the story The boy who was never afraid by Alfred Smedberg in Between gnomes and goblins in 1912. The story is about a boy, Nisse, who sets out to find the farm's only dairy cow, which the troll has taken. Undaunted, he managed to get on good terms with the horrible creatures he encountered during his journey in the forest, and with their help he managed to free the cow from the greedy troll.

In old Nordic folklore, trolls were thieves and stole both food and drink and often other valuables. T role often looked like ordinary people. They could actually be beautiful too, although they were often revealed by their tails which often stuck out from under their skirts or through a trouser leg. It was the artist John Bauer who gave us the image of trolls as ugly creatures of nature with big noses.
