The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting As night falls, the witch and the boy sneak out of the mountain by iconic artist John Bauer from 1914.
In the picture we see a sorceress and her son walking through the deep forest with a cauldron between them on a pole. The painting is an illustration to the fairy tale "When the witch took care of the king's big belly" by Elsa Beskow and was published in Among gnomes and goblins year 1914.
An excerpt from the story: "The people penetrate into the wilderness and the goblins have to move. But the sorceress and her boy remain; they have developed a taste for fried pork and coffee. They tie up their tails and set about washing for people, including the king. But the sorceress remains fond of the little children's clothes and hides some garments. One of the king's maids is blamed and driven away. She ends up with the goblin, who begins to think of marriage. She is saved, however, by the king's young hunter, who finds her in the forest. The thieves are exposed and the goblin disappears .".
