The story behind the motif
Canvas with a fantastic portrait of the king Christian II, also known as Christian Tyrant. He was King of Denmark and Norway 1513-1523 and King of Sweden 1520-1521.
On November 4, 1520, Christian II was crowned Swedish king in Stockholm. Before the coronation, he had promised his opponents that all old grudges between Denmark and Sweden would be forgiven. But just a few days after the ceremony, he suddenly broke his promise and decided to punish his enemies. I Stockholm bloodbath, which took place on Stortorget in the Old Town on 8–9 November 1520, over 80 people lost their lives in very brutal ways.
On the way home to Denmark, Kristian took the opportunity to execute more opponents. I Nydala monastery, outside Jönköping, for example, he had the abbot and some monks drowned. Afterwards, the surviving monastic brothers wrote about the incident in their copybook and then called Kristian one "infamous tyrant".
