The story behind the motif

Djurgården in its full splendor in 1897. The photograph was taken during the Stockholm exhibition from Strandvägen. In the picture we see the Djurgård Bridge and a typical folk life of the time with crew, women in long dresses and straw hats and men in dark suits and plum tops.

At the end of the 19th century, industrialism was in full swing. The main goal of the Stockholm exhibition was to market Sweden internationally and show technological progress. Novelties in food were also showcased. For the first time, people in Sweden could buy hot dogs as fast food. The women who sold the sausages were called sausage ladies. In order not to burn themselves on the sausage, the customers had to borrow white cotton gloves. This turned out to be an expensive story and shortly afterwards they started serving the hot dogs in baked bread.

Most of the exhibition buildings were later demolished but some still stand. The Nordic Museum, the Biological Museum and the Skånska gruvan were part of the exhibition area.
