The story behind the motif
Canvas print with the painting Carl XIV Johan's visit to Berg's locks from 1856. The painting was created by the artist Alexander Wetterling and depicts a historical event where King Karl XIV Johan of Sweden visits Berg's locks during construction.
Göta Canal was inaugurated on 26 September 1832 and was attended by King Karl XIV Johan of Sweden. Göta Canal's biggest attraction is Bergs locks. During the summer thousands of boats pass by to see how the water flows through the locks.
Charles XIV Johan was the first Bernadotte. The childless Charles XIII adopted Jean Baptiste Bernadotte from France when he was 47 years old. He had a long professional career behind him and was one of Napoleon's marshals. He was elected Crown Prince of Sweden in 1810 and took the royal name Charles XIV Johan.
