The story behind the motif

Hilma af Klint is considered to be one of Sweden's foremost female artists of all time. This work is called Buddha's Standpoint in the Earthly Life - No 3a and probably alludes to Yin and Yang - a symbol of harmony and balance between extremes, time and space (Swedish title: Buddha's Standpoint in the Earthly Life - No 3a).

Hilma was a pioneer in abstract painting. Her work connects the visible and the invisible through various symbols. The style was part of Hilma's spiritual lifestyle. She was a vegetarian, studied theosophy and meditated.

At the end of the 19th century, it was unusual for women in Sweden to study at higher education. The Academy of Arts accepted its first female students in 1849, and opened the so-called "Fruntimmersavdelningen" where Hilma also studied.

Hilma af Klint is one of the artists who only received attention and recognition long after her death.
