The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting Broder Martin by the Swedish artist John Bauer from 1913. In the picture we see the monk Broder Martin standing in the middle of troll cloth. The trolls crowd so that they are almost stepping on each other. In the middle of them stands a beautiful, blonde woman who shines with a golden glow. Who is she?

Bauer is best known for his illustrations for the early editions of Among Elves and Goblins . The painting Broder Martin was an illustration proposal for Emil Eliason's fairy tale in the fairy tale collection Among Elves and Goblins in 1913.

Brother Martin goes from Sigtuna to Bergslagen to do missions, but fails to convert the idolatrous forest dwellers. He wanders into the forests and is hired by goblins, fairies and other beings. In the end, he suffers martyrdom and receives the martyr's crown in heaven.

Artist: John Bauer | Created: 1913.
