The story behind the motif
Canvas print with a beautiful painting created between 1897-1900, by Albert Edelfelt. The painting depicts the performance of the Pori Citizens' March .
This march is a Swedish military march from the 18th century by an unknown composer. Today, the march is mainly used in Finland and since 1918 has been the Finnish defense parade march. In Finland, it may only be performed in military and other ceremonial contexts, such as at the Finnish president's party ceremonies and at the declaration of Christmas peace in Turku. The march is also played in honor of Finland's gold medal in the Olympic Games.
Albert Edelfelt was a Finnish-Swedish artist. He was one of the first Finnish artists to achieve international fame. In 1895, Edelfelt was elected chairman of the Artists' Guild of Finland and in 1896 he painted the portrait of Tsar Nicholas II. Edelfelt's last work was The Inauguration of Åbo Akademi in 1640 for the Solemn Hall of the University of Helsinki.
