The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting The Lifeboat is Taken through the Dunes, created in 1883 by the Danish artist Michael Ancher.
Michael Ancher became famous for his portrayals of Skagen's heroic fishermen and their dramatic work at sea. Michael Ancher came to Skagen in 1874 at the age of 25, and was the only visiting artist to settle permanently in the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, Michael Ancher actively participated in the founding of Skagen's museum, but he died in 1927 - the year before its official opening.
With this fantastic painting of sailors in a snowy coastal landscape, Michael Ancher continued his story of Skagen's heroic fishermen - an epic on a grand scale. The story opened with the question Will He Weather the Point and progressed to a tentative ending with A Crew is Rescued and finally concluded in The Drowned Fisherman .
