The story behind the motif
Beautiful canvas with the painting "A Child's Funeral" created in 1879 by Albert Edelfelt.
In the picture we see a still and poignant scene where a small coffin with a child's body is taken to its final resting place in a rowing boat. There are six people in the boat: three women, two men and a girl, all dressed in festive clothes. They are pictured on a mirror-like lake outside Haiko, near Borgå, on a sunny late summer morning.
Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905) was a Finnish artist and one of the most prominent and internationally known painters from Finland during the 19th century. He is particularly known for his portraits and genre (everyday life) paintings, as well as for his contribution to Finnish artistic development during that period.
