The Same View, a Different Hour
Renoir returned to the same view and painted a second version at a different time of day; it is now at the Clark Art Institute in Massachusetts. This particular painting was bought by James Duncan in 1883 and became the first Impressionist painting owned by a Scottish collector.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with a beautiful painting created in 1881 by Auguste Renoir - a historically famous French artist. The painting is called The Bay of Naples, which is also a place located on the west coast of Italy in the province of Naples.

The corner of the balcony visible in the lower left of the painting indicates Renoir's vantage point overlooking the Bay of Naples. His position provided an iconic view of the harbor with the volcano Vesuvius in the background, which swept smoke into the sky.

Auguste Renoir is counted among the foremost Impressionists. He is known for his motifs of young women, children, flowers and landscapes. From 1864 he received permission to paint copies of the paintings that were in the Louvre in Paris.

Artist: Auguste Renoir | Created: 1881.
