The title may be misleading: the Met believes that the painting, like Kensett’s related studies, most likely depicts a sunrise. From his studio on Long Island Sound, open water lay to the east, making the morning light considerably easier to observe than the evening light.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting S unset on the Sea by the American landscape artist John Frederick Kensett (1816–1872). He painted the work in 1872, the same year as his death, which has made the work extra talked about and an object of great wonder and fascination. A warm sparkling sun sets beyond an open sea in an incredible sunset.

Delivery time is normally around 5–7 business days within the Nordic countries, as we handcraft our canvas artworks in our factory in Sweden, and the canvas fabric also needs to dry before we stretch it over a wooden frame and ship it to you.

If you order from Norway, your order will be delivered with Fedex; to Sweden and the rest of the world with DHL. Your package is normally delivered to your nearest pickup point!
