The Painting within the Painting
Guardi concealed his signature in a painting within the painting. On the small canvas carried at the lower right, he wrote his name—and made it depict gondolas on rippling water, a Venetian element otherwise absent from the painting. It is a deliberate, playful feat of illusion.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the fantastic painting Piazza San Marco by the artist Francesco Guardi from the late 1760s.

The motif of the picture is of the famous square Piazza San Marco, in Swedish: Markusplatsen , located in Venice, Italy. In the image, Guardi has used a playful, illusionistic device by signing his name in the miniature cloth worn by the man on the lower right. It seems to depict something otherwise missing from the painting: gondolas and the choppy waters of Venice's famous canals.

Guardi was an Italian painter, mainly active in woodcut painting and was the brother of Giovanni Antonio Guardi. In 1784 he became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia , founded in 1750.

Artist: Francesco Guardi | Created: Late 1760s.
