A Date in Flux
The date in the title is a small time capsule. The tradition surrounding Ingólfur Arnarson’s settlement is now usually placed in 874, not 872, and the story is based on sources written down much later. Wergeland’s history painting from 1877 thus also captures the nineteenth century’s desire to make the age of the sagas precise.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting Nordmennene lands in Iceland in 872 by the Norwegian artist Oscar Wergeland (English title: Norseman Landing in Iceland).

The picture shows Viking explorers arriving in Iceland in 872. It is believed that Iceland was first settled by Vikings who, among other things, had emigrated from Norway when King Harald Hårfager united Norway and made himself the sole ruler. Norway and Iceland formed a union in 1262.
