The story behind the motif
Under the waves off Kanagawa is a famous woodcut by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese title: Kanagawa oki nami ura).
The work is a traditional Japanese Ukyio-e style illustration of extreme waves bearing down on three fragile boats on the Pacific Ocean off the Japanese main island of Honshu with Mount Fuji in the background. The wave probably represents a monster wave "okinami". The boats pictured are transporting fish from the southern islands to Edo.
Artist: Katsushika Hokusai | Created: about 1832.
