The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting Forest herb, butterflies and snake by the Dutch artist Christian Jansz Striep (1633-1673) . The motif consists of a natural scene with bright butterflies and a greyish-yellow snake that dramatically reaches out to catch one of them with an open gap. In many Dutch still lifes from the 17th century, the artists introduced various kinds of symbols. Here the snake could be interpreted as a symbol of evil, while the bright butterflies could symbolize the good, the pure or the soul
The painting was created during the Dutch great power period, also called Holland's golden age, when the country's trade, military, natural science and art were among the most celebrated in the world.
