The Gift from a Benefactor
In 1909, the painting was donated to the National Gallery by Olaf Schou, who was also Harald Sohlberg’s important supporter when the artist struggled financially during his years in Røros. The museum gift is therefore an unusually tangible trace of a patron’s contribution—not only to the artist’s life, but to the history of the work itself.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting Gata i Røros, also known as Efter snestorm, Lillegaten Røros 1903 by Harald Sohlberg. Harald Sohlberg was a Norwegian neo-romantic artist. His motifs from Rondane and Røros have become something of Norway's "national painting" and contributed to Røros being on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Røros is one of the coldest places in Norway. The resort is located approximately 600 meters above sea level and receives plenty of natural snow in the winters, as does the nearby Swedish ski resort Funäsdalen. It is not unusual for some frosty nights in July.
