A Title for Sailors
The Danish original title uses a sailor’s expression: to “clear the land from oneself” means to sail away from the coast towards open water. Carl Rasmussen thus gave the painting an unusually precise nautical formulation—not merely a poetic title—when he painted it in 1878.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with a beautiful painting painted in 1878 by the Danish artist Carl Rasmussen. The painting is called The morning after a storm and depicts the sky breaking open over a still stormy sea. At sea, two ships also sail over the blue waves.

Rasmussen was particularly known for his marine motifs and in 1872 he received a travel grant from the Academy of Fine Arts and spent eleven months in the Netherlands, Belgium, Paris and Italy. Rasmussen died on the way home from a study trip to Greenland, after falling overboard while painting on the ship's deck.
