In 1818, Johan Gustaf Sandberg first showed a drawing titled Valkyrior ridande till strid at the Götiska förbundet exhibition in Stockholm. The society had asked artists to work with Nordic history and mythology; Sandberg later transformed the idea into the large painting.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the incredible painting Valkyries riding into battle by Johan Gustaf Sandberg from the 19th century.

The painting shows a battlefield with Vikings and has an enormous wealth of detail and drama in it. On the right we see Valkyries plunging from a dark sky to bring the body and soul of some of the fallen warriors to the gods. From the left comes the goddess Freya to take the rest.

In Norse mythology, Valkyries were female beings who brought the dead on the battlefield and their souls to the world of the gods. Half of the selected fighters were allowed to come to Oden's Valhalla and half to Freja's Folkvang.

The painting is one of the most important works of the Gothic movement. Gothicism was a movement that wanted to highlight Swedish antiquity and its importance. An art critic wrote the following about the painting in 1818: "The layout of this masterpiece is grand, the whole poetic, the characters happily portrayed and the horses full of fire".

Artist: Johan Gustaf Sandberg (1782-1854)
