In 1648, the painting was taken from Prague to Sweden as spoils of war when Swedish troops captured the city at the end of the Thirty Years’ War. It was created at the Habsburg court and most likely depicts the court historian and collector Wolfgang Lazius.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the famous painting The Librarian from 1562. The artist behind the work was named Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

The work is a portrait of Wolfgang Lazius but shows a man composed of books in front of a grey-blue drapery. Wolfgang Lazius was a scientist in the service of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I. Lazius was the official historian of the empire and managed, among other things, the imperial library and the art collection.

Giuseppe Arcimboldo was an Italian artist and belonged to an illegitimate branch of a noble family. He is best known for his portraits that depict the four seasons as human figures. The Librarian is one of his earliest works.

If you order from Norway, your order will be delivered with Fedex; to Sweden and the rest of the world with DHL. Your package is normally delivered to your nearest pickup point!
