The story behind the motif
Canvas board with the famous painting Stańczyk by Polish artist Jan Matejko from 1862.
The painting depicts the historical jester Stańczyk, who served at the Polish court in the 16th century. In the work, Stańczyk is seen sitting alone and gloomy during a party, while an ominous event (Poland's loss of Smolensk) has taken place, of which the jester is aware but not the party-goers. Matejko uses Stańczyk as a symbol of Poland's political condition and intellectual unrest at the time.
Known for his large-scale historical paintings, Jan Matejko is one of Poland's most influential artists. He created works that emphasized Polish history and nationalism during a time when Poland was divided between three great powers.
