Boldini’s Salon Debut
When Giovanni Boldini exhibited the painting at the Paris Salon in 1879, it was his debut there. A contemporary critic did call it somewhat nonchalant and glittering, but also praised its vitality and rapid movement—and declared that Boldini was more than a painter of fashion.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with a beautiful painting from 1879 by the Italian artist Giovanni Boldini. The work is called The Dispatch-Bearer . In the picture we see a soldier on a street in Paris. On the soldier's bag can be seen the inscription " Garde Républicaine ", French for Republican Guard . The inscription indicates that the soldier is delivering a message to the Paris Municipal Guard. He has arrived so early that the groundskeeper is still cleaning the pavement outside the gate of an elegant and modern Parisian building. A couple gives each other a discreet adieu to the right of the picture outside the optician's shop. A beautiful snapshot of Paris in the 19th century.

Boldini was one of the most sought after artists of La Belle Epoque . Boldini had a large, wealthy and international customer base. He was friends with the art collector and baron Maurice de Rothschild, the poet Robert de Montesquiou, the writer Colette and the composers Giuseppe Verdi, Edgar Degas and John Singer Sargent.

Artist: Giovanni Boldini | Created: 1879.
