The Debut That Made an Impression
When Gustave Caillebotte made his public debut at the Impressionists’ exhibition in 1876, this was the painting that received the most praise of his contributions. He showed it alongside two other interiors from his family’s life – and the man was his younger brother René. The debut marked the beginning of Caillebotte’s central role as both an artist and an organizer for the Impressionists.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the beautiful painting Young man at his window created in 1876 by Gustave Caillebotte - a French impressionist painter. Caillebotte was part of the Impressionist circle and exhibited at several of their joint exhibitions.

When Caillebotte first exhibited this painting, he presented it not as a portrait but as a genre scene, entitled Jeune homme à sa fenêtre (Young man at his window). As a model, Caillebotte used his brother René, who stands in the family's newly built tenement at the corner of rue de Lisbonne and rue de Miromesnil in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.
