The story behind the motif
In View from Dosseringen by Sortedam Lake toward Nørrebro from 1838, Christen Købke painted a tranquil evening scene in the Copenhagen of his day. The gaze stretches across Sortedam Lake toward Nørrebro, from the Dosseringen area where the artist lived in Østerbro and often found his motifs close to home.
Two women stand on a small jetty beside the Danish flag, watching a rowboat out on the rose-tinted water. Along the shore, dense greenery rises, while houses, windmills, and a smoking chimney can be discerned on the far side of the lake. Købke, a central painter of the Danish Golden Age, renders the everyday urban fringe with both precise observation and a strangely grand character. The calm water surfaces, the open sky, and the small figures give the composition a fine sense of depth that works just as well up close as on the wall.
