The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting The Twelve Wild Ducks by Theodor Kittelsen from 1900 (Norwegian title: The Twelve Wildlings ). In the picture we see a beautiful Norwegian landscape with mountains and a fjord. Ducks fly down to land on the green meadow. Behind the mountains we see a warm light from the sunset.
The Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen is like the Swedish John Bauer, known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses. His works are still iconic in many Nordic homes, but even though he is celebrated as a national artist in Norway, he is hardly known outside of Scandinavia.
