Behind Levaillant’s name stood an entire image-making process: Jacques Barraband created the source drawing, Langlois printed the engraving in colour, and the final colours and shadows were added by hand in watercolour. The technique gave the plates an unusually three-dimensional effect and made the series famous for its lifelike bird images.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage illustration of a colorful parrot . The illustration comes from Natural History of Parrots (1801-1805) and is drawn by the French author and ornithologist Francois Levaillant. In the picture we see, among other things, the text Perruche Ara, Guarouba Femelle. Pl.19 - French for Macaw Parakeet, female Guarouba.
