When the Blue Whale Turned Sulphur Yellow
The name “sulphurbottom” referred not to the whale’s own colour, but to a yellowish layer of diatoms that could stain its underside. When Charles M. Scammon published the plate in 1872, he used Sibbaldius sulfureus; today it is generally classified as the blue whale Balaenoptera musculus. An old whalers’ name thus became a taxonomic clue.
