The Smugglers

Smugglers on the West Coast by Josef Wilhelm Wallander in 1855.

It is night on Sweden's west coast in the middle of the 19th century and the full moon is high in the dark and cloudy sky. Ten men smuggle barrels of unknown contents up from their rowing boats. Further out to sea is their ship from which they rowed in.

The painting was included in Images from Swedish folk life with text by JA Berg:

"It is a terrible sight to see, on a cold, dark autumn or winter night, the figures of smugglers struggling against the surging waves. Every year they bend almost under the edge of the boat, and you still hear the sizzling of the water, the panting of the oarsmen, forced by the violent effort. - Night's peace seems to reign undisturbed, but if you listen closely, - the terrible panting, the muttered oaths, the hoarse scornful grin testify, however, that there is neither peace in nature nor in the human heart..."
