The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting The Sea Monster , or Sjömonstret , by Theodor Kittelsen from 1881.
Theodor Kittelsen is a Norwegian artist who, like the Swedish John Bauer, is known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses. His works are still iconic in many Nordic homes, but even though he is celebrated as a national artist in Norway, he is hardly known outside of Scandinavia.
Even though the figures portrayed in Nøkken (The Sea Monster), The Forest Troll, and Pesta (The Black Death) are over 100 years old, they still resonate as icons in the minds of many Norwegians.
