Despite its title, this is not primarily a map but the game board for a Dutch parlour game. Rijksmuseum has also preserved the separate rules. The object has been broadly dated to 1869–1907, but a game catalogue places the edition around 1900 and identifies J. Vurtheim as the lithographer.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage map of the North Pole. The map was illustrated by the Dutch publishing company Nijgh & Van Ditmar sometime between the years 1869-1907.

During the late 19th century, nations competed in grand North Pole expeditions, akin to the modern era's race to space, driven by honor, scientific discovery, and commercial prospects, including the quest for more efficient trade routes to China. Sweden emerged as a leading force in polar research when Finnish-Swedish explorer Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld and his crew made history by navigating the Northeast Passage for the first time.
