When the book behind this plate began publication, the year was given as “an IX” – year nine of the French Revolutionary calendar. The colour print then received additional shadows and hues by hand in watercolour, a method that gave the bird images the three-dimensional effect admired by contemporaries.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage illustration of a gray parrot . The illustration comes from Natural History of Parrots (1801-1805) and is drawn by the French author and ornithologist Francois Levaillant. In the picture we see, among other things, the text Le Perroquet Cendré Pl. 100 - French for the gray parrot.
