Cheaper, larger panes of glass transformed the shopping street during the nineteenth century. Historic England describes this development as perhaps the single most important influence on Victorian shopfronts: goods moved out towards the street, and the window itself became a sales surface long before today’s signage.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an old illustration from 1899. In the picture we see a window sign for Lindgren's Kappaffär. Company name and address are written in beautiful period typography. Westerlånggatan 28 or Västerlånggatan as it is called today is located in Gamla Stan, Stockholm.

The illustration was published in the book Den Praktiske Skyltmålaren - A collection of executed company signs and alphabets reproduced in rich color printing to guide painters, at the same time a magnificent and practical pattern book for customers and was written by the sign master Josef Jonsson in Stockholm.
