The Mississippi River, one of the world's great rivers, fascinated Americans during the 19th century. Currier & Ives issued more than thirty prints of activity on the river, with steamboat races ranking among the most popular images.
In this 1866 print, we see a dramatic moonlit Mississippi River scene, where four steamboats travel with flames and smoke from their chimneys. On the right of the picture, the "Queen of the West" and the "Morningstar" lead the race, while two steamers sail behind. On the beach to the left there is a bonfire and a small crowd of men cheering and waving to the boat passengers.
Nathaniel Currier established a successful New York-based lithography business in 1835, producing thousands of hand-colored prints in various sizes. Together they create a vivid panorama of mid to late 19th century American life.
